Teaching is like conducting

Teaching is like conducting, a good teacher will relate to these similarities in their classroom. The ability to direct an entire class as a group, yet be aware of each individual student’s wellbeing and unique learning abilities.

A good conductor is able to keep an orchestra together with clear direction, yet still allow the individual players to retain their own personal expression. They know their score very well with the ability to adapt to different interpretations of the work.  An experienced conductor is acutely aware of the whole orchestras performance yet will know what each individual part is doing. Skillful conductors are able to scan their score ahead of time to anticipate what the orchestra may do. They are masters of multitasking with the ability to improvise in real time. A good conductor cares about their players. They are admired, respected and trusted by the entire orchestra.
